The Great Calculation

Early calculators were unwieldy, noisy, smelly machines that required constant maintenance. Based on the collection of mechanical engineer Mark Glusker, the concept of this residency was to give visitors and participants of all ages and abilities hands-on, delightful, and novel ways to approach the collection.

The residencies were held at Machine Project in LA and Southern Exposure Gallery in SF. TGC was a series of lectures, interactive performances, workshops, and an exhibition focused on the machines and their pre-solid state nature. Work created by participants was on display along with the calculators. Workshops consisted of the drawing and dissection of machines and custom coloring books from old advertising, all enhanced with music by local artists Aero Mic’d. After the talks were machine-inspired performances by Daedalus and Matt Dryhurst.
